On July 11, 1881, voters re-elect Republican Leonard P. Smith as mayor of the City of Seattle.

Pursuant to the charter approved by the legislature, the mayor's term of office was one year. Elections were held on the second Monday of July.

Smith was elected to his first term as mayor in 1880. Among his other civic interests was the Library Association.
