On March 6, 1854, Dr. Wesley F. Cherry dies of wounds received as the member of a posse sent to Whidbey Island to arrest the killers of William Young. A Native American member of the posse was killed and the other three white members were wounded. A Snohomish suspect is killed along with an unknown number of other tribe members. Cherry is acknowledged as the first public safety officer to die in the line of duty in Washington, but the slain Native American whose name was not recorded may also deserve this honor.

On July 26, 1891, King County Sheriff's Deputy George W. Poor is mistakenly killed by U.S. Customs Inspector James C. Baird north of Woolley in Skagit County. The deputy had been assisting another Customs Inspector, Z. Taylor Holden, in an attempt to intercept Chinese immigrants who were illegally entering the U.S. from Canada. Holden may have been in league with the smugglers.

On July 3, 1902, escaped criminal Harry Tracy (1877-1902) participates in a gun battle near Bothell, killing Snohomish County Deputy Sheriff Charles Raymond, and wounding King County Deputy Sheriff Jack Williams. Making his way back to Seattle, he comandeers a home near Woodland Park, and has dinner. Leaving the house, he is involved in another gun battle, in which Patrolman E. E. Breece and posseman Cornelius Rowley are mortally wounded. Tracy had escaped from the Oregon State Penitentiary one month earlier and had eluded lawmen throughout Oregon and Washington.

Deputy Scott and four other deputies encounter two masked men who are systematically flagging down and robbing motorists at gunpoint. After the officer is shot, the bandits take two motorists hostage and speed away in their automobile. One robber kills the other in an argument.
