On February 4, 1970, the Washington State Legislature approves Referendum 20 to place the right to an abortion before the voters.

The State House of Representatives voted 64 for (29 Republicans and 25 Democrats) and 31 against (15 Republicans and 16 Democrats). The Senate had passed the bill on January 30 by a vote of 25 for and 23 against. The referendum vote took place on November 3, 1970.
