On July 26, 1879, a fire destroys 20 buildings in downtown Seattle (renamed Pioneer Square).

Among the businesses destroyed are the American House hotel, Seattle Sawmill (formerly called the Yesler Sawmill), Newell & Cosgriff chair factory, Schwabacher warehouse, and the Crawford & Harrington warehouse.
