Tourists visit Snoqualmie Falls for the first time in the summer of 1855.

HistoryLink.org Essay 202 : Printer-Friendly Format

In June or July, 1855, the first group of tourists visits Snoqualmie Falls, a spectacular waterfall located on the Snoqualmie River in eastern King County.

The group from Olympia traveled by schooner to Snohomish City, located on the Snohomish River 20 miles downstream from Snoqualmie Falls. From there they traveled in "first class canoes," accompanied by 14 Native American guides.

Sources:
“Pleasure Excursion” Pioneer and Democrat (Olympia), July 27, 1855, p. 2; “That Excursion,” Ibid., August 24, 1855, p. 2.
Note: On January 3, 2008, the date of this Timeline was changed from 1865 to 1855. The claim of a present-day source of 1865 for the first tourist visit to Snoqualmie Falls is in error.
