2000 Census: Seattle population exceeds 563,000 and King County counts more than 1.7 million residents in 2000.

In 2000, the U.S. Census Bureau counts 563,374 residents in Seattle, which exceeds its previous high reached in 1960. The city grows by more than 47,000 persons since 1990. King County has seven of the largest 15 cities in the state including Seattle, the largest, and Bellevue, the fifth largest. King County’s population is pegged at 1,737,034, an increase of about 230,000 persons in 10 years. The county added about the same number of people between 1980 and 1990. Washington state increased by about 1,027,500 persons during the decade, to 5,894,121 people. Four central Puget Sound counties (King, Snohomish, Kitsap, and Pierce) gained just over half the state’s population increase.
