Downtown
Seattle's compact downtown is squeezed between First Hill and Interstate-5 on the east and Elliott Bay on the west. It is bracketed by Denny Way and Seattle Center on the north and by the new Seahawks and Mariners stadiums on the south. Today's Pioneer Square was first settled in 1852, and the downtown gradually expanded through a series of landfills and regrades. The downtown area includes three historic districts (Pioneer Square, Pike Place Market, and the International District), a bustling waterfront and retail core, and numerous cultural attractions.
