Greater Duwamish
Although credit for founding Seattle usually goes to the Denny Party, which landed at West Seattle's Alki beach in November 1851, the future city's first permanent white settlers actually arrived two months earlier in present-day Georgetown. They were farmers attracted by the meandering Duwamish River's rich delta and valley. Beginning in 1910, the river's muddy delta was filled and its winding "oxbows" were gradually straightened to create a modern industrial waterway. Former farms and pastures were gradually paved over for industry, including Boeing Field. Once independent communities such as Georgetown and South Park have fought to retain their original flavor. Nearby Beacon Hill has developed as an ethnically diverse neighborhood crowned by a landmark federal hospital that now houses Amazon.com.
